2nd Gen Moto X Android 5.0.2 Lollipop Update Now Available at AT&T

Back in October 2014, Google officially announced Android 5.0 Lollipop. A month later the new update was hitting the first Nexus devices, which were followed shortly after by both the unlocked and Verizon Moto X 2014 variants. Three months later we hear that the 2nd gen Moto X Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update is now being pushed to the AT&T users.

A couple of days ago, Motorola begun the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop soak tests for both Verizon and AT&T Moto X and that the update should be released soon. Now the new firmware is being released for all AT&T customers. And when I say “all” I mean “some” because we are dealing with a staged roll out. You know the drill. When your phone is ready to receive the OTA update, you’ll see a system update notification. In case you haven’t received the notification, perform a manual check under Settings > About phone > Software updates > Check now. Still no update? Then keep on waiting for it. The Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update for AT&T Moto X 2014 has software number 22.21.34 and update file is quite big so remember to connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Now let’s take a look at the changes brought by the new update. According to AT&T’s changelog you’ll get Material Design, which is the colorful and fluid interface everyone is talking about, New Interruption and Downtime settings, the new card-based Overview space (you may know it as Recent from KitKat), native flashlight, multi-user support, Screen pinning (lock the screen to a specific app), Android Runtime for better in-app performance, and Smart Lock with Trusted Devices or Trusted Places. AT&T LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA Starts Rolling Out to Users

AT&T pulled off a surprise today by rolling out the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop OTA for LG G3 owners. It was so far believed that Sprint will take the honor of being the first US carrier to roll out the Android 5.0 Lollipop for the LG G3. A leaked document recently revealed that Sprint plans to roll out the Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA to owners of the G3 from the 16^thonwards.

The Android 5.0.1 Lollipop OTA for the AT&T G3 variant is now being seeded to users and a few users have already reported that they have indeed received the update today. The OTA update weighs in at 689.53MB and includes all the features that are part of the Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA for the International variants of the LG G3. These include an updated user-interface design based on Google’s Material Design guidelines, improved performance thanks to the switch to Android ART runtime, Smart Lock feature that allows you to unlock your LG G3 using devices such as Android Wear smartwatches, improved Bluetooth connectivity, new lockscreen and heads-up notifications, and other bug-fixes and improvements.

LG had announced late last month that the G3 Lollipop update will be expanded to the US soon, although no specific information was revealed on which carrier would be releasing the updated first. The delay in the update rollout for the US market was due to the fact that the US carriers test the update themselves for a period of a few weeks before they roll out the update to their customers. LG started the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the G3 in December last year and has since been expanding the update rollout to newer regions. Sprint is expected to be the next carrier to release the update, expected on the 16^th. Other carriers such as Verizon and T-Mobile could also roll out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update soon.

If you do not see an OTA update notification yet on your AT&T LG G3, do not worry. OTA updates usually take a few days to show up for all users. In the meanwhile, you can also check for the update manually by going to Settings – About Phone – System Updates and then tap on check for updates. Make sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network before downloading the update as the OTA update will not download over the cellular network.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.4 Update for AT&T Now Rolling out

Yesterday, Vice President of Product Management at HTC, Mo Versi responded on Twitter to a customer on Friday that, HTC USA “just received TA on 4.4.4 for AT&T M8.” The AT&T HTC One M8 is already running KitKat, so all the specific features such as transparent status and nav bars, white status bar icons, full screen album and movie art in the lock screen, immersive mode, cloud printing, or color emoji support, were already available for the users. According to the HTC official, the new HTC One M8 Android 4.4.4 update arrives to introduce Voice over LTE support (VoLTE) and to add the camera-centric HTC Eye Experience software suite.

As usual, the new software update is being rolled out in phases, which means that some of you might not be able to download the update right away. As you may know already, as soon as AT&T pushes 4.4.4 to your terminal, you should be able to see a system update notification. All you need to do is tap on it and follow the on-screen instructions. AT&T has released the Android 4.4.2 KitKat OTA Update for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 and 10.1 inch tablets. It is not a major upgrade, but it will still add several new features and functions that should make your Android device much more stable.

The new Android 4.4.2 upgrade build is live and it might possibly be the last one with KitKat in its title, as AT&T will most probably start testing the Android 5.0 Lollipop firmware, so that it will be ready for an early 2015 release. When your terminal becomes eligible to receive the new Android 4.4.2 update you should receive a system update message in the notifications bar. Tap on it, choose ‘Download now’, wait until the download is completed, then select ‘Install now’. Your smartphone should reboot and install the new software. New Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Android 4.4.2 KitKat Released by AT&T

Sony Mobile to Sacrifice Volume For Profits As It Struggles With Smartphone Business

Sony has had it tough in the smartphone business. The company decided to go solo in the smartphone network by acquiring Ericsson’s stake in Sony Ericsson in the year 2011 and renamed the company to Sony Mobile. Soon after the formation of the new company, Sony aimed to become the third largest smartphone vendor in the world. Unfortunately the goal was a bit too optimistic and the company has actually been finding it tough to maintain its sales in the past few quarters. To turn things around, the new Sony Mobile CEO Hiroki Totoki has decided that the company will shrink its smartphone portfolio in the coming year and target profit instead of chasing market share like it was doing so far.

The company is bracing itself for volumes in the smartphone business shrinking by as much as 30% in the near future. The aim going forward is to remain profitable and just maintain presence in the smartphone market instead of targeting market share or increasing unit sales of smartphones. Sony had already announced plans earlier this year of cutting down on its mid-range smartphone portfolio and focusing only on the high-end segment. In the coming year, the number of entry-level and mid-range Xperia models could be limited to just a few.

In its previous announcement, Sony revealed that the Xperia business was the main reason behind its losses and it was not expecting to make any profits from the mobile business this year and would be happy if it could get the business to break even this financial year. It has also lowered its full year smartphone sales forecast twice this year. As part of its turnaround plan the company will focus on the gaming and image sensor business to get the company back into profit.

Sony’s hopes of becoming the third largest smartphone OEM were never going to come true unless the company focused on the two key smartphone markets – China and USA. The relationship with AT&T didn’t last long and while it continues to sell Xperia flagships through T-Mobile, which alone isn’t enough to make an impact in the American market as T-Mobile has the smallest market share among the major US carriers. The lack of extensive marketing has also been a factor behind the slowing sales of Xperia smartphones. Even though the company now spends a lot more on marketing its latest smartphones, initially Sony had ignored the need to properly market its smartphones to the global consumers.
