After a delay
of almost three weeks, HTC is finally rolling out the Android Lollipop OTA
update for its One M8 GPE and One M7 GPE smartphones. The update was originally
planned to be rolled out from November 21st onwards, but HTC had to postpone the
rollout due to some last-minute bugs being found in the firmware and other
technical glitches. The update was finally ready to be pushed out Tuesday, but
HTC had to wait for Google’s approval. They finally received the approval today
and if you own a One M8 GPE or One M7 GPE smartphone, you should expect to see
the update on your device today.
Instead of
Android 5.0 that was expected, One M8 and One M7 GPE owners will be receiving
the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop update directly. The OTA update carriers the build
number LRX22C for both the smartphones. A lot of users seem to have received
the update already and have shared screenshots on Twitter. The update was also
announced on Twitter by HTC’s Product Vice President Mo Versi yesterday. The official
isn’t yet available but the OTA update description talks about the usual
Android 5.0 Lollipop features like the new Material Design UI, improved
performance thanks to the switch to Android Runtime (ART), new notification
layout and automatic interruption controls, battery saving mode and
improvements to battery life as part of Project Volta.
If you
haven’t yet received the update notification on your HTC One M8 or One M7 GPE
yet, you can also download and manually flash the update for the two. The
update ZIP for the One M8 GPE can be downloaded from this link while the One
M7 GPE update can be downloaded from here. The update weighs in at around 500MB. Once the
file has been downloaded, just transfer it to the internal storage on your
device and flash it via custom recovery. Before you flash the ROM, do remember
to wipe the cache, system, data, and Dalvik cache. Also perform a factory
reset. This will ensure that you don’t face any issues later and will not need
to re-flash the firmware to get rid of bugs due to a ‘dirty installation’
without wiping.
With the One
M8 and One M7 GPE Lollipop update released, it is still going to be a long wait
for the owners of the regular HTC One M8 and One M7 smartphones as HTC is
expected to release the Android 5.0 update for the two flagship smartphones
only by early next year.
